JEDDAH, 27 May 2008 — The Sri Lankan Consulate is moving from the Sharafiyah district to Al-Khalidiyah, opposite the Saudi Arabian Airlines offices at Al-Jabayla Street, near Al-Amoudi Mosque.
“We will start providing consular and other services at the new location from Sunday (June 1), Sri Lankan Consul General Abdul Latiff Mohamed Lafeer told Arab News yesterday.
He said the consulate would continue to function at its present location at Sharafiyah district, off Khaled ibn Waleed Street, till Saturday.
“The new location is more spacious than the present one for rendering consular services and also for hosting community activities that are increasing,” he said.
The location is convenient for the community as SAPTCO buses operate from downtown Jeddah to a point close to the new location,” said the consul general, who assumed charge seven months ago.
The consulate has been at its present location near the Sri Lankan community school for about three years. It moved there from Al-Salama district, where it remained for seven years since opening.
The consul general said that in addition to the professional association of Sri Lankan expatriates and Sri Lankan Expatriates Society, many other activities are being planned.
“We will be hosting various educational and IT programs that will benefit the community,” he added. The consulate is planning for a soft opening of the new premises in mid-June.
