ABU DHABI, 2 June 2008 — Officials from the UAE Ministry of Interior and representatives from the UAE Human Rights Society yesterday discussed the conditions of inmates in the county's prisons.
Issues discussed included rehabilitation and services rendered to inmates. "In line with the orders of General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, minister of Interior, we devised rehabilitation programs for inmates, with the hope that such program would help to easily reintegrate into the society," said Brig. Mohammed Ali Al-Shamsi, director general of Reformatory and Punitive Institution.
He added that Prisons authorities in the UAE have adopted modern concepts whereby inmates are given the opportunity to realize their talents and adapt to new ways of life.
The UAE Human Right Society delegation was headed by Yousef Jumaa Al-Baloushi.
Meanwhile, Dr. Sheikh Sultan ibn Mohammed Al-Qasimi, supreme council member and ruler of Sharjah, yesterday ordered a salary hike of people employed by Sharjah Police and the Sharjah Police Academy. Both expatriate and national employees are expected to benefit from the increase.
