DUBAI, 9 June 2008 — A Serbian man involved in the 14.7-million dirham armed robbery of a jewelry store in Dubai’s famous Wafi City mall has been sentenced to 10 years in jail followed by deportation.
Nichola M., 33, appeared stunned when the verdict was read out yesterday at the Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance. He was found guilty of aiding and abetting an unidentified number of fugitives in the robbery on April 15, 2007. His 52-year-old compatriot, M.M., who was accused of possessing stolen goods, was acquitted.
The two Serbians were arrested in Dubai a few days after the robbery. They were the only suspects who had been tried in connection with the crime.
Shoppers were stunned as armed men crashed through the front doors of Wafi City in two stolen cars. The men threatened staff at the exclusive Graff store with toy guns and stole jewelry, before getting back in their cars and driving away.
