SRINAGAR, 12 June 2008 — Businesses, schools and roads have been shut down in Indian-controlled Kashmir due to a strike against the government’s fuel price hike. Streets are largely empty for a straight third day in Srinagar, the main city of India’s Jammu-Kashmir state. Government offices, banks and schools are either closed or poorly staffed, and thousands of tourists are stranded in the city.
PWS Free Medical Camp Tomorrow
SRINAGAR, 12 June 2008 — The Pakistan Welfare Society (PWS) will hold a free medical camp at the premises of the Consulate General of Pakistan tomorrow. The registration of patients will begin at 4 p.m. Free medical checkup will be carried out by doctors between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. and deserving patients will be given medicines free of cost. Gynecologists and pediatricians will also attend patients.
EU Concerned Over Lanka Rights Record
COLOMBO, 12 June 2008 — A European Union official says he has expressed serious concerns about alleged human rights violations in Sri Lanka and asked the government to show results in its investigations. Joao Aguiar Machado, the European Commission’s Deputy Director General for External Relations, told reporters yesterday that he raised the issue during a three-day joint commission meeting with the Sri Lankan government.
