AMMAN: The US Embassy yesterday advised American citizens to avoid the site of the shooting attack in the hearth of Amman that left six people wounded on Wednesday. The embassy said in a message that Americans visiting Jordan should maintain a high level of security caution, particularly in crowded areas, restaurants, hotels, clubs and shopping centers.
The Jordanian authorities, meanwhile, have identified the assailant as Thaer Al-Wahidi, an 18-year-old Jordanian of Palestinian origin, but said the incident had “no political or terrorism” links. The incident took place just outside the ancient Roman Theater in downtown Amman when Wahidi shot and wounded the six people, including four Lebanese who are members of the famous Kaslik choir, which had just performed at the theater.
The six people have now left the hospital after receiving the necessary medication, officials said. The attacker, who shot himself in the head after committing the crime, was pronounced clinically dead at hospital, according to the Public Security Department spokesman Maj. Mohammad Khatib.
