PUNE: The state-run Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) yesterday declared a state of emergency over the critical power situation in Maharashtra, except Mumbai.
MSEDCL chief engineer Rameshsinh Gautam called a press conference to brief the media on the current power situation which he described as “very critical.”
Gautam said that the MSEDCL has decided to impose a 6-hour power cut in two phases in Pune and said that the period of power cuts may be increased and this would continue until October.
However, power cuts ranging from 6 to 14 hours have been imposed throughout the state. The situation has reached an alarming stage due to lack of rains during the current monsoon season. Industries have been told to close down every Thursday till the power situation improves.
In another development, state Bharatiya Janata Party President Nitin Gadkari has sought narcoanalysis of the Shiv Sena and BJP members of Parliament from Maharashtra for ditching the Shiv Sena-BJP saffron alliance during Tuesday’s crucial trust vote. In the meantime, the Congress-NCP alliance is likely to make attempts to woo rebels from the opposition camp.
While Sena’s Tukaram Renge-Patil from Parbhani has not come out in public since last Friday, BJP’s Haribhau Rathod from Yeotmal faces the flak of party bosses.
