SRINAGAR: The Amarnath shrine land row yesterday claimed three more lives across the two regions of Jammu and Kashmir and left 21 security men and ten civilians injured. Indian officials pledged yesterday to stop Hindus from imposing an economic blockade on the mainly Muslim Kashmir Valley as tensions heightened with the deaths of three protesters.
A Muslim man was killed when he was hit by a tear gas shell in Srinagar during a protest against the blockade and reported attacks on Muslims, police said.
Separately, two Hindu protesters were killed in the Hindu-dominated Samba district when police opened fire at a crowd that attacked cars and jeeps.
Police opened fire to quell a violent mob which indulged in heavy stone pelting on police and paramilitary in the Samba town situated on the Lakhanpur-Srinagar national highway in the afternoon resulting in on-the-spot death of two persons.
