SRINAGAR: One person was killed and 50 others wounded here yesterday when police fired bullets and used batons to disperse thousands of pro-independence protesters defying a curfew.
Authorities imposed the indefinite curfew ahead of a separatist rally planned for today, but thousands of people defied the order in several places in the Kashmir valley.
Police said paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) opened fire at a stone pelting mob at the Buchwara locality of the capital, resulting in the death of a 65-year old Ghulam Qadir Hajam and critical injury of his son Mohammad Ayub Hajam.
Four more people were injured in police firing at Zanpa Kadal in old city.
The local news channels in the meantime have been issed gag orders. The district magistrate issued the orders “to stop with immediate effect the telecast of all news and other items which are inflammatory in nature and thereby disturbing the peace and tranquility of general public.”
