RIYADH: Consider this a pre-Ramadan, anti-soap opera celebration. According to yesterday’s Al-Eqtisadiah newspaper, Rasheed Jabr, 60, will be slaughtering two sheep at a rest house outside of town and feeding family and friends in that traditional Saudi gesture of generosity. Why? Because, finally, the popular Turkish soap “Lost Years” is over, concluded, a thing of the past, alhamdulillah. Jabr says that the soap has kept his family glued to the television though all 140 of its episodes. “I would sit alone in my room while my wife, daughters and sons would watch,” said Jabr, who describes himself as a not a big TV watcher anyway, much less a fan of a soap that — while it might be addressing social issues, also engenders unrealistic ideals of marriage and family that, after all is said and done, is not portraying the real world of family and marriage. So Jabr decided to celebrate the end of the soap opera, just in time for Ramadan, when a new batch of soaps are going to air to much fanfare.
