RIYADH: Mobily is offering free WiMAX for domestic subscribers at no charge for the installation and without the hassle of underground wiring. Speeds of up to two megabits per second are on offer from Sept. 1.
This is Mobily's first such product after the company took over Bayanat, a data communications operator. The company is set to offer a broader portfolio of similar and related products and services soon. The first phase of the new service will see it providing coverage in four major cities - Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam, and Alkhobar. WiMAX coverage will eventually cover the entire Kingdom.
"Mobily's broadband @ home is the Kingdom's first and only prepaid WiMAX service for domestic subscribers. By using WiMAX technology, broadband @ home eliminates the need for problematic and annoying underground wiring, which caters for only limited numbers of users to begin with. With broadband @ home, high-speed Internet couldn't be more accessible: Just the machine into the mains lead and you're on your way to the information superhighway," the company said. "The service runs on the principle of plug and play and so there is no need for subscribers to call up the company. You can take your service with you anywhere you go," the company stated. New subscribers will not have to pay any fee during Ramadan. They get the modem for free. A phone call to 0560101100, or a visit to any of Mobily's branches, is enough to get things going.
