MADINAH: The blessed month of Ramadan is over but ironically, some people have gained weight, thanks to the tendency to feast on delicious but fatty and high-carb delicacies in iftar. There are some wacky theories as to why people gobble down such huge amounts of calories. Some conventional wisdom includes the idea that people should bulk up on carbs and sugars so they can make it through the next day. In fact, eating carbohydrate-rich food late into the night can have the opposite effect of creating sluggish people whose bodies were tasked with digestion while they sleep. Equally inaccurate are stories about how to lose those extra kilos earned during Ramadan. One nutritionist told Al-Madinah newspaper yesterday that drinking cold water instead of hot water increased water intake’s fat-burning qualities. In fact, most nutritionists agree that drinking lots of water is healthy, but water itself at any temperature has no effect on burning fat. The nutritionists advise wasn’t all bad: She wisely advised that people stick to veggies and fiber-rich food and to stay away from processed flours and sugars. And exercise always helps.
