AMMAN: Jordan’s King Abdallah yesterday issued a decree appointing Nasser Lawzi, chairman of the country’s national carrier, as new chief of the Royal Court, according to a Royal Court statement.
Nasser Lawzi, the head of the Royal Jordanian airlines and a former Cabinet minister, succeeds Bassem Awadallah who resigned last week apparently in response to criticism by lawmakers and local press that he was forming a “shadow Cabinet” at the Royal Court that encroached on the powers of the current Jordanian government.
The 51-year-old Lawzi is the son of Ahmed Lawzi, who was prime minister between 1971 and 1973 and chief of the Royal Court between 1979 and 1984.
The post of the Royal Court chief is considered the country’s third most important post after the king and the prime minister.
