RIYADH: A Shoura Council delegation left for Syria yesterday to participate in a meeting of Arab parliamentarians organized by the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union (AIPU), which takes place today.
“The Shoura Council is an important AIPU member and hence its participation is quite essential,” said Osama Kurdi, a Shoura member.
Kurdi, however, could not provide information about the agenda of the AIPU meeting.
The meeting is likely to discuss bilateral and regional Arab issues of mutual concern, including Arab-Iranian relations.
A report carried by the Saudi Press Agency said the participants of the meetings are scheduled to review a number of issues of mutual interest.
The Saudi delegation includes several Shoura members and officials including Assistant Secretary-General Ahmad Al-Yahya and Fahaad Mutad Al-Hamad, a senior member of the council.
The Damascus event will also include a meeting of the AIPU’s legal committee. Referring to the agenda, a statement released by the AIPU office said that the meeting would discuss steps taken toward the building of the new premises of the union and the appointment of assistants to the AIPU secretary-general.
“It will also study a proposal presented by the UAE National Federal Council for the establishment of a specialized legal center and agreement on the implementation of the proposed Arab parliamentary award,” said the statement.
Moreover, the AIPU meetings will seek to strengthen contacts and promote dialogue among Arab parliaments and parliamentarians, while facilitating to exchange legislative experience and information.
