JEDDAH: The general court here has postponed issuing a ruling on the case of a Saudi couple whose marriage was brought into question by the wife’s half brothers who claimed the couple are tribally incompatible.
Motasem Khashoggi, who is heading a team of lawyers representing the couple, said the presiding judge postponed the case due to ongoing efforts to reconcile the woman with her half brothers who have showed some positive signs. “A reconciliation session between the woman and her brothers has been decided,” the lawyer said. He, however, did not disclose when the session is to be held.
Khashoggi said the brothers, who earlier rejected reconciliation efforts, have softened their stance. “The judge understood this and gave them time for reconciliation before they appear in court on April 13,” he said.
The woman’s half brothers filed a lawsuit requesting the court to annul the marriage, which took place four weeks ago, claiming her husband is of a different tribal background. The woman, however, claims her half brothers want to abrogate her marriage after she refused to give them a power of attorney over her share of their father’s inheritance.
The woman moved in with her husband a few weeks ago after her brothers allegedly prevented her from staying at the family home in Madinah.
