YAVATMAL: Maharashtra chief minister Ashok Chavan has declared that a high level magisterial inquiry would investigate the cause behind the Hindu-Muslim communal riots on Friday evening in Pusad town of Yavatmal district of the Vidarbha region. Curfew was relaxed yesterday afternoon after the situation was found to be limping back to normalcy.
Speaking at a press conference on Saturday evening, Chavan said that stern action would be taken against the rioters who indulged in violence and arson during a procession taken out by Hindus on the occasion of the Hindu festival of Ram Navami.
The riots erupted after alleged stone pelting on the procession after which violent mobs from both the communities fought pitched battles and went on rampage setting 40 houses, 30 shops and several vehicles on fire. The police fired three rounds in the air to disperse the mob. Two people, one a Muslim and the other a Hindu, were reported to have been killed while 12 people injured, according to police sources.
