MANAMA: Bahraini security forces announced yesterday the arrest of two men suspected of planning terrorist attacks.
“Police seized from their house two Kalashnikov machine guns, live ammunition, a pistol and swords. They were planning terror acts in Bahrain and neighboring Gulf countries,” said Interior Minister Rashid bin Abdullah Al-Khalifa in a statement.
The arrests took place April 26. Authorities have not revealed the names, ages or nationalities of the two men.
The men reportedly confessed to possessing the weapons. Authorities said they also found CDs, tapes, computers and bank statements in the suspects’ residence.
In December, security forces broke up a suspected terrorist cell and charged it with plotting attacks on nightclubs and commercial centers to coincide with Bahrain’s Dec. 16 National Day.
Sixteen men later confessed on live television that they were influenced by sermons and brainwashed by preachers. The men were released last month after receiving royal pardons.
