ISLAMABAD: A four-member UN team probing the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto on Friday sought access to close associates of former President Gen. Pervez Musharraf, officials told Arab News.
The team, having a limited mandate, asked the government to organize its meeting with former head of Intelligence Bureau retired Brig. Ejaz Shah, former Director General of Military Intelligence Maj. Gen. Nadeem, Chief of Staff to Musharraf, Gen. Hamid Javaid, former spokesman of Musharraf retired Maj. Gen. Rashid Qureshi, former Interior Minister retired Lt. Gen. Hamid Nawaz and former Interior Secretary Kamal Shah.
The UN team includes Wright Voranic, Fujiwara, Mersky and Pradhan Summar. The commission members have so far interviewed close associates of the slain former prime minister, inspected the site of murder and held meetings with medical staff of Rawalpindi General Hospital. The commission, which began its work on July 1, was mandated to submit its report identifying facts and circumstances concerning Benazir’s tragic death on Dec. 27, 2007 to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon by Dec. 31, 2009. However, last month, the commission had sought an extension on the grounds that its work was affected by violence in Pakistan.
