Rains lashed Taif from 2 p.m. and continued to pour till late in the night disrupting air and land traffic. At 9 p.m. all flights were diverted from Taif airport to King Abdul Aziz International Airport in Jeddah as a precautionary measure.

Bahra also witnessed heavy rainfall. Twelve Civil Defense teams toured areas in eastern Jeddah to calm residents of the Quwaiza, Kilo 14 and Suwaid districts. Civil Defense officials said that the water at the Musk Lake was not at a dangerous level.

Jeddah municipality was fully geared to face any eventuality when rains began falling in many districts of Jeddah shortly before midnight on Thursday and Friday.

Trucks were sent to pump stagnant rainwater from roads and all drainage networks in the city were opened.

"When the rain began falling around midnight on Friday, the Civil Defense was ordered to face any emergency, including flash floods and building collapses. However, the rain was not as heavy as we feared. On Thursday night the rain registered at 0.7 mm while the rain on Friday amounted to only 0.3 mm. The operating room in the municipality received 569 calls complaining of rainwater collecting in their streets," Director of Operations in the municipality, Muhammad Qattan said.

The control room received reports of stagnant water in six main streets and 18 lanes of north Jeddah while in west Jeddah, water was rising in nine major streets and 17 lanes. The water formed pools in 21 main streets and 43 lanes in Aziziah district. There were no serious incidents reported from districts East of the Haramain Expressway, which suffered heavily during the Nov. 25 floods.

Qattan said two main streets and 12 lanes had water rising in the Balad district though not to dangerous levels while in the Jamiah district only one street and five lanes were affected.

The municipality also sent health workers to spray insecticide in many districts and locations where mosquitoes were likely to breed.
