A legal source said that there was no hard evidence to prove the more major charge against Ali Mujammami.

Had that been the case, he could have received a sentence of death by stoning for adultery. Al-Madinah reported that the judge, Sheikh Salman bin Yahya Al-Wadaani, said the evidence did not prove conclusively that the accused had six wives. He said that the punishment of death by stoning could be handed out only if the adultery of a married man or woman is proven beyond all doubt.

Apart from 120 lashes, Mujammami was ordered to memorize and learn the commentary of the last 48 chapters of the Holy Qur’an so that he could be more familiar with Islamic regulations.

The court also banned him from traveling abroad. The man was also prohibited from leading prayers and preaching sermons, which he used to do in a rural district in Jazan before he was arrested less than two years ago.The commission arrested the man in 2008 after receiving reports that he had six wives, three of them Yemenis.

There was some confusion about the existence of a sixth wife.  He told investigators that the woman found with him in an apartment was his wife Fatimah, while she gave a different name in her statement.

The judge also observed that his fifth marriage was incorrect as the fourth wife who he was divorcing at the time had not completed her iddah, the prescribed waiting period of a divorced or widowed woman before remarriage.
