Prince Abdul Aziz bin Majed ordered the formation of the committee comprising the governorate and the Health Affairs Department in Madinah to investigate the deaths of Ghadeer Abu Halawa, 11, and Namer Al-Ruwaithi, 3.

Ghadeer was admitted to Ohod Hospital on Thursday after complaining of stomach pains and is thought to have died as a result of a medical mistake. Al-Ruwaithi died at the same hospital on Saturday after being admitted there a month ago with burns.

Prince Abdul Aziz has ordered the committee to submit its findings to him directly.

Al-Ruwaithi’s father said he had asked the hospital to transfer his son to King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Riyadh, and that his calls were ignored. He accused Ohod Hospital of negligence that led to his son dying after falling into a coma.

“I admitted my son to the hospital on Feb. 22 ... they could not find a bed in the emergency section and so gave him a small bed in the pediatric ward. When my son needed a blood transfer, they could not give him the same blood type,” he said.

“I requested my son be transferred to King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Riyadh but this was turned down. My son was subsequently put in the intensive care unit and was subjected to a series of medical mistakes that worsened his situation day by day,” he added.

“I demand an investigation and call for those responsible for his death to be held accountable.”

Ghadeer was admitted to the hospital with stomach pains and died soon after. Her father, Subhi Abu Halawa, said he brought his daughter to hospital after she complained of stomach pains.

“They gave her an injection and after that I began to see marks all over her body. Her condition suddenly worsened and she was admitted into the intensive care unit. They told me that she was sensitive to the injection and that she would improve,” said Subhi.

“She was asleep because she had been sedated. I returned home and called the hospital several times. Each time they informed me that she was improving. On Saturday, when I went to the hospital to check, they told me she had died and did not bother telling me how,” he added.

Subhi said the hospital withheld the case file claiming they needed to show it to officials. He then filed a complaint with the ministry.
