- JEDDAH: The National Society for Human Rights (NSHR) is looking into a complaint from an Egyptian widow that she has waited 16 years to receive blood money (diyya) that an Abha court ruled she deserved for the death of her husband.
The woman, identified only as Ikram, had a relative in Saudi Arabia pursue a wrongful death complaint against her late husband’s company, an unnamed contracting firm based in the Eastern Province.
Muhammad Al-Hanadi, the husband, died in an accident in 1994 while traveling in a company vehicle. Hanadi was a steel worker.
On Aug. 7, 2006, a court ruled that the company must pay SR100,000 to the widow in blood money for its share of blame in the cause of his death. “We have received no money or any information over the past years except for the original verdict issued by the court, and we have been waiting all these years,” said Ikram in her letter to the NSHR.
Ikram is the mother of an unreported number of children. Because she was unable to get permission to come to the Kingdom to pursue her grievance, a relative represented her in the court.
