In Milwaukee, Jim Edmonds' leadoff single set up a two-run rally in the sixth inning that put Milwaukee ahead to stay against Colorado.

Edmonds, a 39-year-old former All-Star who spent last season out of baseball, made his second start for Milwaukee. He went 2 for 4 with a double and scored twice.

Brewers closer Trevor Hoffman earned his 593rd career save.

In Phoenix, Kelly Johnson hit two of Arizona's four homers, helping the Diamondbacks rally for a win over San Diego.

Johnson connected on the second pitch of the game and added a tying two-run drive in the fifth. Chris Young's homer put Arizona up 4-3 and Justin Upton also went long.

Scott Hairston hit a three-run homer in the second for San Diego.

In Washington, Ryan Howard hit a two-run homer and an RBI double in Philadelphia's win over Washington.

Philadelphia starter Cole Hamels labored through five innings to take the win, and hit an RBI single in the fourth that gave two-time reining NL champions a 3-2 lead.

Washington tied it before Howard's two-run drive to right-center in the fifth.

In Cincinnati, Albert Pujols hit a tiebreaking single in the seventh inning as St. Louis downed Cincinnati.

Matt Holliday followed with a two-run double for the Cardinals.

St. Louis starter Adam Wainwright gave up only three hits in seven innings, including Orlando Cabrera's two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth that tied it at 2-2.

In Atlanta, Chipper Jones hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the eighth inning and Atlanta held on to edge Chicago.

After 15 consecutive outs for Braves' batters, Martin Prado hit a one-out double before Jones connected for his first homer of the season.

Atlanta reliever Peter Moylan worked around a hit and a walk during a scoreless eighth to take the win.

In Pittsburgh, Ronny Cedeno singled over a drawn-in infield with the bases loaded and one out in the 10th inning, lifting Pittsburgh over Los Angeles.

Prior to Cedeno's hit, the Pirates hadn't scored since Garrett Jones' three-run homer in the first inning.

In the bottom of the 10th, Dodgers reliever Ramon Ortiz walked the bases full, and Cedeno finished off a nine-pitch at-bat with a line-drive single to left.

In New York, Wes Helms slid home headfirst to barely beat an attempted tag at the plate, giving Florida a tight win over New York.

Helms dashed for home on Ronny Paulino's single, and his hand swiped the plate just ahead of a sweeping attempted tag by Mets catcher Rod Barajas.

Florida pitcher Leo Nunez walked in a run and balked in the tying score over 1 1-3 innings, but came away with the win in the 4 hour, 12 minute game.
