Maj. Muhammad Al-Osaimi, Civil Defense spokesman for Asir, told Arab News on Friday that Sgt. Hazzal Al-Aklabi drowned in Tabalah Valley.

More than 90 Civil Defense officers and privates were involved in the rescue operation, which began on Thursday.

Al-Osaimi said the rains continued to fall on Friday in various parts of the region, trapping cars and people. He added that a rescue helicopter airlifted 31 people trapped in a number valleys, while land-rescue teams saved another 81 victims.

According to Al-Osaimi, the body of a man in his 60s was found in waters near a dam in Balgren, north of the Asir region. He had been reported missing on Thursday.

The Civil Defense has received 384 reports so far about people missing, trapped and stranded due to rains and floods.

He said rescue operations were still ongoing in the southern region.

Many of the stranded people have been saved and a lot of vehicles towed away, Al-Osaimi claimed.

A family of six died when their car was submerged in Al-Shawwas Valley near Abha. Two others have also died in separate incidents.

Heavy rain also caused valleys to flood in the Central Province, the Eastern Province and other places including Riyadh, Bisha, Baljurashi and Najran.

According to the Civil Defense sources a man died and 14 others injured due to floods in Taif, while another man died in Baljurashi. In addition, more than 50 vehicles were washed away.
