Pitching in a steady rain, Halladay (3-0) shrugged off the conditions and allowed two runs and eight hits. He threw 100 pitches, struck out four and didn't walk a batter.

Florida took advantage of three infield hits to score four runs off David Herndon in the ninth before Ryan Madson got the two outs for his third save in three tries.

Carpenter (2-0) struck out 10 in seven innings and allowed an unearned run on four hits, making a strong rebound from a poor outing Sunday. Fernando Nieve (0-1) took the loss.

Adam Kennedy's two-run single in the eighth inning keyed a three-run rally as the Nationals topped the Milwaukee Brewers.

Brian Bruney (1-0), who allowed an unearned run in the top of the eighth to give Milwaukee a temporary 3-2 lead, was the winner.

Sean Burnett retired the only batter he faced in the ninth, and Matt Capps retired two for his fifth save.

It was the second loss in as many games for LaTroy Hawkins (0-2), who allowed four runs in the eighth inning Wednesday in Chicago. He's given up seven runs in his last two innings.

Lastings Milledge singled home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Pirates beat the Cincinnati Reds after blowing a late three-run lead.

Andrew McCutchen singled with two outs and stole second base, making him 6 for 6 in steal attempts. Milledge then laced a single up the middle off Nick Masset (2-1).

Octavio Dotel (1-0) got the win despite suffering his first blown save in three opportunities.

Cincinnati had tied it at 3 in the top of the ninth against Dotel as pinch-hitter Chris Dickerson tripled off the center-field wall and scored on Orlando Cabrera's one-out sacrifice fly to deep left.

Jason Heyward and Melky Cabrera each had two hits during a seven-run second inning, and the Braves cruised past the Colorado Rockies for their third straight win.

Eric Hinske drove in three runs and Chipper Jones homered for the Braves, who again made things easy for Derek Lowe (3-0). In Lowe's three starts, Atlanta has scored 32 runs; the other four starters have gotten a total of 24 runs.

The 20-year-old Heyward led off the second against Jason Hammel (0-1) with a single to center and came around to score. He singled again before the inning was done, knocking out Hammel.

Andre Ethier hit his first grand slam while homering in his first two at-bats, leading the Dodgers over San Francisco.

Vicente Padilla (1-1) allowed three runs and four hits over seven innings and struck out seven after his teammates staked him to a 7-0 lead. Matt Kemp tied a career best by homering in his fourth straight game, but slugger Manny Ramirez left after three innings because of tightness in his right calf.

Giants center fielder Aaron Rowand was hit on the bill of the helmet by a pitch from Padilla in fifth. After several minutes on his knees by home plate, Rowand walked off the field without help, accompanied by San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy and a trainer.

Chase Headley hit a three-run homer off Juan Gutierrez with two outs in the ninth inning to lift the Padres.

Heath Bell (1-0) pitched one inning for the win. It was Gutierrez's first blown save in as many chances.

Starting in the third, the Padres retired the last 19 Diamondbacks, two with assists from Kyle Blanks, the left fielder. Blanks threw out Jackson trying to stretch a single into a double in the fourth, then threw out Justin Upton trying to take second on an error by third baseman Chase Headley.
