“Asphalting and the finishing touches for the two projects are currently under way,” Sameet said.

He added that the two bridges on King Fahd Road are part of the city’s seven projects that are being completed to reduce bottlenecks in the city’s traffic.

Planned projects to ease traffic on King Fahd Road include the construction of bridges at the Bicycle (Darraga) Square, the Orbit (Falak) Square and the White Horse Square.

“Work on the Gharnata overpass and Tahliah underpass started 42 months ago. The overpass with three lanes in each direction is 800 meters long and 23 meters wide.

“The Tahliah underpass is 470 meters long and 29 meters wide with three lanes in each direction though the portion of the bridge is 111 meters in length,” said Saeed Bafehaid, director of bridges and tunnels at the municipality.

“Since the municipality does not want to close the flow of traffic in the areas close to worksites on King Fahd Road, the remaining work to build sidewalks and lay tarmac on the road above the underpass and under the overpass will be undertaken after the bridges are opened for traffic,” he added.

He said this is the third project to be commissioned in 2010. The two other projects were the overpass on Makarona Road and the overpass on the Old Makkah Road where it intersected with Jamiah Road and Iskan Road.

“The two remaining projects to be undertaken this year are an overpass and an underpass on the Prince Majed Road where it meets with Hira Street and an overpass and an underpass at the intersection of Prince Majed Road with Rawdah Road,” he said.

He said the overpass on the King Fahd Road at the intersection with Quraish Road with three lanes on each side was completed at a cost of SR18 million last year.

The overpass on Prince Miteb Road and Tahliah Road began in 2008, he said.
