Three-month-old, Mohammed and Amjad, who were joined at the abdomen and chest and shared a liver, gall bladder and intestine, were separated after six hours of surgery.

Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah called the health minister and congratulated the surgical team on the successful separation of the twins.

Jordan’s King Abdallah later congratulated and thanked Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques on the successful operation of the twins, a statement of the Jordanian Embassy in Riyadh said.

Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah led the operation, which had been ordered by King Abdullah.

“The babies’ condition is stable,” said Al-Rabeeah, who has substantial experience in separating conjoined twins, after the surgery.

Mohammed and Amjad were sent to separate rooms in the hospital’s pediatric intensive care unit as doctors worked to reconstruct the body parts the twins had shared.

This was done to give the boys as much natural organ function as possible, said an attending doctor. “What we do now will affect their quality of life in the future,” added KAMC spokesman Saleh Al-Sagabi.

The operation, which was shown live on the hospital’s website, was originally expected to take longer but finished ahead of schedule, according to Al-Sagabi.

Earlier, Al-Rabeeah met with the twins’ parents to explain the details of the operation to them.

Al-Sagabi said that the odds of a successful operation were shortened due the fact each twin had their own upper and lower extremities. He added that the Saudi government had paid all medical bills and other costs such as the family’s travel and accommodation as directed by King Abdullah.

The twins are in a stable condition but do require round-the-clock monitoring, Al-Sagabi said, adding that the most immediate concern was the risk of infection.

Al-Rabeeah and Dr. Bandar Al-Knawy, CEO of the National Guard health affairs department, received the twins and their parents at the hospital on April 23.

The twins were in good health when they arrived, weighing around eight kilograms together.

This was the 27th separation surgery successfully performed in the Kingdom.

Walid Kazaz, charge d’affaires at the Jordanian Embassy, thanked King Abdullah for his generous support. Yusuf Ahmed Teem, father of the twins, also thanked the king for his humanitarian gesture.
