- PITTSBURGH: Pittsburgh Penguins center Jordan Staal has undergone surgery to repair a cut tendon in his right foot and his playoff status is day-to-day, the team said on Saturday.
"He is not ruled out for the remainder of the playoffs," coach Dan Bylsma told the NHL's official website (www.nhl.com).
The Stanley Cup champion Penguins host the Montreal Canadiens in Game Two of their Eastern Conference series on Sunday.
Staal was injured in a collision with Montreal's PK Subban in the second period of Friday's series-opening victory by the Penguins.
Center Staal, who scored a goal before sustaining his injury, is likely to miss Game Two and perhaps the series.
There was no immediate update on Montreal's injured Andrei Markov.
Markov, the best all-round defenseman for the Canadiens and a key to their penalty kill unit, suffered what the team described as a lower body injury in the first period of Friday's game.
