The Spurs had led 80-78 early in the fourth quarter before the Suns pulled away from the visitors with a 10-3 run that was capped by Channing Frye's fifth three-pointer of the night.

The Suns secured the victory on the back of a balanced attack that featured six players scoring in double digits, led by Amare Stoudamire's 23 points and 11 rebounds.

"It was just a great team victory and at the end of the day we haven't really done anything except what we were supposed to do and that's to hold serve at home," Suns head coach Alvin Gentry told reporters.

"Now we've got to go to San Antonio and try to figure out a way to win the next game." Guards Steve Nash and Jason Richardson scored 19 points each, and Grant Hill added 18. Off the bench, Frye had 15 points on 5-of-6 shooting from three-point range and Jared Dudley added 11.

Tim Duncan led the Spurs with 29 points and 10 rebounds and Tony Parker scored 20 points off the bench.

"Definitely it's a little bit frustrating. I thought we played pretty well but when we had that lead we didn't take advantage," Parker said.

"They beat us on the boards; offensive boards really hurt us tonight. It was one of those games where you think that you have it and they just make big shot after big shot in the second half."

The Spurs held a nine-point lead at the end of the first quarter, but the Suns were able to draw even by halftime.

"It wasn't the start we were looking for, that's for sure.

I don't know if it was nerves or not," Nash said.

"But we hung in there, we rallied each other and told each other to hang in mentally and we weren't going to go the entire game shooting 29 percent and I thought our toughness was great.

"I have to say the most impressive thing to me with the win was the team effort. So many guys made plays for our team tonight and I can't remember really being a part of a team that's had so many guys step up and play so well."

In a show of support for the Latino community over a controversial new state law, Phoenix wore jerseys emblazoned with "Los Suns."

Game Three is in San Antonio on Friday.
