Qasab, sentenced to death on Thursday by Special Court judge M.L. Tahaliyani, will not be transferred to another prison due to security complications.

The Arthur Road prison where Qasab is presently jailed, is meant for prisoners who are undergoing trial. As per prison rules, Qasab was expected to be transferred to a central prison in Pune, Thane or Nashik district.

However as the state government had spent a fortune on constructing a bulletproof cell for Qasab in the Arthur Road prison, he will remain at his present location.

“It is the responsibility of the state government to keep Qasab safe until the implementation of the punishment handed to him by the court. Just as there is outrage and anger for Qasab amidst the people in the country, similar sentiments could also be amongst the prisoners in the Arthur Road prison. If he is attacked by prison inmates, then the state government will be held responsible,” said Minister of State for Home Ramesh Bagwe.
