- JEDDAH: A Bangladeshi national committed suicide by setting himself on fire in Jeddah on Monday.
- The man tied himself to a bed and then set himself on fire using paint thinner at his apartment in the downtown Balad area of the city.
Local people called the Civil Defense and the police after noticing smoke coming from the apartment. “We're still investigating the issue. Early investigations indicate that the person committed suicide,” said police spokesman Col. Misfar Al-Juaid.
“There could be many reasons behind the suicide. However, it is unclear as the matter is still under investigation,” he added.
Police are still investigating the death to ensure no one else was involved. The man's body was taken to King Abdul Aziz Hospital.
Abdul Rahman, a southeast expatriate worker in the Balad area, said hardly anyone noticed that the man had committed suicide.
“He might have done so because of financial troubles back home. Who knows? This is the first time I'm hearing about this. Most people here mind their own business, Abdul Rahman added.
“This is against Islam. It’s forbidden to take your own life in such a way,” said Naseem, a 35-year-old worker.
“We all struggle to make end meets. This man must have been struggling and didn't seek help.”
