Detroit pitcher Jeremy Bonderman (1-2) took the loss despite striking out a season-best seven in a season-long seven innings.

Alex Rodriguez's two-out single in the first scored Brett Gardner, who also singled and stole his 16th base this season. Mark Teixeira's two-out single in the third brought home Derek Jeter, who walked and stole second.

In the early game, Detroit won 2-0 thanks to starter Rick Porcello (3-3) who pitched seven innings in his best outing of the year. Magglio Ordonez scored and drove in a run in the sixth inning.

New York starter Javier Vasquez (1-4) lost despite allowing only an infield hit through the first five innings and striking out seven.

In Anaheim, pitcher David Price won his third straight decision, steering Tampa Bay to a narrow win over Los Angeles.

Price (5-1) allowed three runs in 6 1-3 innings, striking out six. Rafael Soriano, the sixth Rays pitcher, threw a perfect ninth inning for his ninth straight save.

Tampa Bay scored twice on passed balls by Angels backup catcher Ryan Budde.

Los Angeles starter Jered Weaver (4-2) had a career-high 12 strikeouts in seven innings, but was charged with four runs - one earned.

The Rays took two of three from the Angels for their first series win in Anaheim since 1999.

In Boston, Shaun Marcum pitched seven shutout innings, leading Toronto to a tight victory against Boston.

Marcum (2-1) allowed just two singles, struck out six and walked only one. Kevin Gregg got the final three outs for his 10th save despite allowing an RBI double and a run-scoring single.

Travis Snider homered, doubled and drove in all three runs for the Blue Jays, who had lost its previous five games against Boston.

Red Sox starter Tim Wakefield (0-2) recorded his 2,000th career strikeout.

In Arlington, Derek Holland struck out seven in six shutout innings of his first major league start of the season, helping Texas rout Oakland.

Holland (1-0) walked only one while throwing 103 pitches after being called up from the Oklahoma City RedHawks to fill an injury gap in the rotation.

Josh Hamilton and Vladimir Guerrero hit consecutive homers, while Michael Young, Max Ramirez and Hamilton all homered and each had three hits to help the Rangers take over sole possesion of the AL West lead, breaking a tie with the A's. Rookie Justin Smoak also connected as the Rangers had a season-high five homers and 17 hits.

Oakland starter Gio Gonzalez (3-3) took the loss.

In Minneapolis, Denard Span had two singles and a walk to help Minnesota edge Chicago.

Twins starter Carl Pavano (4-3) got an overdue win. It was his fourth straight start allowing two earned runs or less, but Minnesota had been shut out in the previous two. Jon Rauch pitched a perfect ninth for his ninth save.

White Sox starter John Danks (3-2) took the loss.

In Kansas City, Russell Branyan hit a two-run homer to lift Cleveland over Kansas City.

Asdrubal Cabrera snapped a 0 for 16 skid with two-run single in the fifth inning for the Indians.

Fausto Carmona combined with three Cleveland relievers to shut out the Royals. Carmona (4-1) lowered his earned run average to 3.43 and is already only one win shy of matching his 2009 total when he went 5-12.

Kansas City starter Kyle Davies (2-2) gave up six hits in five innings as the Royals lost their seventh straight.

In Baltimore, Brad Bergesen held Seattle scoreless into the eighth inning as Baltimore became the last team in the majors to reach the 10-win mark.

Bergesen (3-2) allowed one run in 7 2-3 innings, winning his third straight start.

Luke Scott homered and scored twice for the Orioles, while Adam Jones had three hits and Miguel Tejada drove in two runs.

The Mariners rank last in the AL in runs. Seattle starter Ryan Rowland-Smith (0-3) took the loss.
