Seattle snapped a five-game skid and Griffey’s teammates mobbed him between first and second base. Nine days ago the Mariners rallied to his defense following a report he was unavailable to pinch-hit in an earlier loss because he was sleeping in the clubhouse.

It was the first game-ending hit of Seattle’s disappointing season.

Gregg (0-1) had 12 saves in 13 chances before he allowed singles to Mike Sweeney and Jose Lopez then walked Milton Bradley to begin the ninth. He walked Casey Kotchman on a full-count to make it 3-2.

Josh Bard tied the game with a sacrifice fly.

Shawn Kelley (2-0) pitched the top of the ninth for Seattle.

In Cleveland, Luke Hochevar pitched a complete game to finally beat Cleveland and Alberto Callaspo hit a three-run homer, sending Kansas City to a 9-3 win.

Hochevar (4-2) gave up four hits to go the distance for the third time in his career. He had no trouble with the Indians, who were without the top two hitters in their lineup—Asdrubal Cabrera and Grady Sizemore, both out with injuries. Hochevar, who had lost his last three starts to Cleveland, gave up two first-inning singles and then retired 15 of 16 before Shin-Soo Choo’sdouble in the sixth.

Callaspo connected for his seventh homer in the third off Mitch Talbot (5-3), and Jose Guillen later added his ninth homer this season.

Jhonny Peralta hit a two-run homer for the Indians, who dropped their fourth straight and fell below the Royals into last place in the AL Central.

In Oakland, California, Miguel Cabrera and Magglio Ordonez both drove in two runs for Detroit, and Jeremy Bonderman won for the first time in over a month.

Cabrera snapped an 0-for-12 streak with a single in the third, then added a two-run homer in the fifth. Ordonez singled home two runs in the third, and Ramon Santiago had an RBI single in the fourth to help the Tigers win for the fourth time in five games.

Bonderman (2-2) walked the bases loaded in the third and hit Kurt Suzuki with a pitch. Bonderman ended up allowing three hits and four walks over six innings, striking out a season-high eight.

In New York, Carlos Pena homered twice and Ben Zobrist and B.J. Upton also connected as Tampa Bay won its sixth straight.

A day after tagging A.J. Burnett, the majors’ best team came out swinging against Andy Pettitte (5-1).

Jason Bartlettled off with a double, Carl Crawford followed with an RBI single and then Zobrist homered. Just like that, it was 3-0.

James Shields (5-1) pitched into the eighth inning and Tampa Bay improved to a remarkable 17-4 on the road and 30-11 overall. The Rays swept the two-game series between the clubs that began the day with the best records in baseball.

Shields moved to 2-7 lifetime against the Yankees.

Pettitte had won nine straight decisions — including four in last year’s postseason — since losing at Tampa Bay on Oct. 3.

In Boston, Kevin Youkilis hit a three-run homer and added an RBI double to help Jon Lesterearn his fourth straight victory.

Lester (4-3) allowed two runs — one earned — six hits and zero walks, striking out nine for his fifth career complete game.

Adrian Beltre homered and Victor Martinez had three doubles for Boston, which completed a two-game sweep. The Twins have scored six runs total while losing their last three games to fall out of sole possession of first place and into a tie with Detroit atop the AL Central.

In Arlington, Texas, Nelson Cruz had a three-run homer and drove in four runs in his first career four-hit game, and Texas ran its winning streak to four games.

Rangers starter Scott Feldman (2-4) had the benefit of early run support to win for the first time since April 11 despite allowing a career-high 12 hits over six innings.

Feldman gave up four runs, struck out five and walked one as AL West leader Texas won for the 10th time in 14 games.

Matt Treanoradded a three-run homer in a five-run eighth and David Murphyhad three of Texas’ season-high 20 hits to help the Rangers equal their highest scoring output of the season.

Luke Scott’sthree hits led the Orioles, who have lost five of six and own the worst record in the majors (13-29).

In Chicago, Ervin Santana pitched seven solid innings and Juan Rivera hit a two-run homer for Los Angeles.

Kendry Morales had three hits and drove in two runs for the Angels, who have won five of seven.

Santana (3-3) didn’t have any problems with the White Sox, who came into the game with the worst batting average in baseball at .230. He allowed one unearned run and seven hits. He struck out six and pitched around three walks.

The White Sox have only won two series—Royals and Mariners—this season and have lost eight of 12.

White Sox starter Jake Peavy (3-3) was tagged for six runs and eight hits. He struck out eight and walked two.

The White Sox staged a comeback in the eighth inning against the Los Angeles bullpen.

Angels closer Brian Fuentes pitched a perfect ninth for his sixth save in eight opportunities.
