Man-of-the-match Sharma's workmanlike 101 not out in overcast conditions at Queens Sports Club followed his maiden ODI ton in the series opener against Zimbabwe at the same venue on Friday.

The 23-year-old right-hander faced 100 balls, hitting six fours and two sixes as India surged to 243-3 after Sri Lanka were earlier dismissed for 242.

"It's probably one of my best one-day innings," Sharma said. "But it wasn't easy chasing. Credit should also go to everyone, we made our plans and executed them well." It was a comfortable chase after India's bowlers, led by seamer Ashok Dinda and spinner Pragyan Ojha who both took 2-44, blunted Sri Lanka's attack.

India lost its first wicket when opener Murali Vijay was trapped in front by Nuwan Kulasekara for 14. Wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik added 18 runs before lobbing to substitute fielder Mendis at short leg off spinner Ajantha Mendis.

A ground record third-wicket partnership of 154 from 168 balls between Sharma and Virat Kohli then put India firmly on top.

Kohli scored 82 runs off 92 balls. The pair found the gaps with ease and timed superbly against the seamers.

Kohli was eventually dismissed when he hit straight to Dilhara Fernando at long on from off-spinner Suraj Randiv's bowling.

But Sharma steered India home comfortably, helped by captain Suresh Raina, who finished on 24 not out.

"It takes something special to score back-to-back hundreds," Raina said. "It will also be nice for him (Sharma) if he can get a Test place."
