- Prince Salman and German Minister of Foreign Affairs Guido Westerwelle discussed ways of achieving greater cooperation between Saudi Arabia and Germany in a meeting in Berlin on Tuesday.
Prince Salman, who arrived in Germany on an official visit on Sunday, expressed his happiness to visit Germany, underscoring the existing cooperation between the two countries. Westerwelle said the prince’s visit would promote further cooperation between the two countries.
The prince and his accompanying delegation also attended a luncheon hosted by the German foreign minister in his honor. The delegation also included Prince Faisal bin Salman, chairman of the Saudi Research and Marketing Group, the Saudi Press Agency reported.
Prince Salman also visited the Museum of Islamic Art in Berlin on Tuesday. The prince was welcomed to the museum by its director, Stefan Fier. The prince also signed the museum’s register of important visitors. He was also briefed on the museum's rare exhibits of Islamic art from various countries dating back from the eighth century until the 19th century.
The exhibit includes collections of ancient oriental carpets and rare copies of the Holy Qur’an written in various styles.
Among the most notable displays is the front of an ancient Umayyad palace in Jordan, presented by the last sultan of the Ottoman Caliphate, Sultan Abdul Hamid II, to the last emperor of Germany, Emperor Wilhelm II.
The museum was founded by Director of Museums in the German Empire Guillaume von Bode in 1904.
On Monday, Prince Salman and Mayor of Berlin Klaus Wowereit went in a convoy to the headquarters of the Municipal Council of Berlin. On the way, the prince and the mayor stopped at Brandenburg Gate, one of the main landmarks of Berlin and Germany.
During the reception at the Municipal Council, the prince called for greater cooperation between the two countries noting that Custodian of the Two Holy Mosque King Abdullah’s visit to Germany in 2007 and German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s visits to the Kingdom had greatly boosted relations between the two countries.
The prince also invited the mayor of Berlin to visit Riyadh.
