The sources said that the occupier ran over 48-year-old Mazin Al-Jamal in the southern Al-Fahs area when he was crossing a road.

They added that Al-Jamal was seriously injured and transferred to the Hadassah Ein Karem hospital in Jerusalem for treatment. He later died from his wounds.

In a separate development, a Jewish settler killed a Palestinian in East Jerusalem early on Tuesday.

Elsewhere in the West Bank, Palestinians and Jewish occupiers from the nearby settlement of Yitzhar clashed in the village of Asira Al-Qibliyah, southwest of Nablus.

Palestinian sources said that the clashes erupted after the occupiers attacked the village.

Israeli Army radio quoted Israeli military sources as saying that the occupiers had come to cause trouble in the village after some of their fields near the settlement of Yitzhar were set alight.

The radio report said that Israeli forces dispersed the two parties using tear gas.

The new round of violence came hours before the meeting between Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and special US envoy George Mitchell in the West Bank city of Bethlehem.

The two officials had held several meetings in recent months in a bid to revive the stalling peace process.

Peace talks between the Palestinian Authority and Israel stalled when Israeli troops waged a three-week military offensive in Gaza between December 2008 and January 2009.

On Tuesday, Abbas rejected calls from Hamas and other Palestinian factions to suspend peace talks with Israel and said that US-sponsored proximity talks would continue despite an Israeli assault against a Gaza-bound flotilla that resulted in the deaths of nine people.

Abbas made the announcement during a phone conversation with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon.
