- JEDDAH: When 11-year-old Omar Shah glanced at a leaflet one of his friends brought to school, he at once decided his course of action.
- The idea of a chocolate camel was just too tempting and he mounted a “let’s go to the Hilton and win some chocolate” offensive against his mother’s reluctance.
His determination and confidence was rewarded on Wednesday by the delivery of his own weight in chocolate at his home. Omar had correctly guessed the weight 175 kg — of the amount of Lindt chocolate used to make the camel.
“When I visited, the thing I enjoyed most was the demonstration of making chocolates,” he said. “I like chocolates very much and it was interesting to see how they are made.”
He added that he was very surprised when he saw the 2.5-meter high camel. “I was amazed, and thought ‘How could they make that?’”
When Sandy Gisler from Lindt first contacted Omar to tell him he had won, he was left excited and thought he would receive a second call to tell him it was a mistake. “But it wasn’t; it was true!” he said.
Omar, accompanied by his slightly incredulous mother, was publicly weighed and duly presented the Lindt Chocolate Cheque at the Jeddah Hilton on Sunday June 7. And on Tuesday 9, the delicious truth was delivered, all 48 kg of it, filling the Shah home with boxes and bars of Lindt chocolate.
“I will take it to school, and give some to my friends and brothers,” the generous Omar told Arab News. “We will make a big invitation and share it with our friends and family.”
He was as good as his word when late Tuesday a stream of excited friends tottered out of his house clutching presentation boxes and wreathed in grins and under the strict injunction from Omar’s mother “None before dinner!”
