On a night when the NHL’s Chicago Blackhawks were saluted for their Stanley Cup championship, Lilly and Gavin Floyd put on a splendid display of pitching.

Floyd (2-7) flirted with a no-hitter of his own for the White Sox before Alfonso Soriano doubled with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Chad Tracy followed with a single, producing the game’s only run.

That took care of Floyd’s run at history — but Lilly (2-5) was still going and the tension began to mount as he inched closer to the 14th no-hitter in franchise history.

After Pierre’s single, Carlos Marmol entered and the White Sox loaded the bases with one out.

Nationals 9  Indians 4: At Cleveland,  Stephen Strasburg had trouble with Cleveland’s mound while lasting 5 1-3 innings during his second major league start, leading the Nationals to the victory.

Coming off a 14-strikeout debut, Strasburg (2-0) allowed just two hits, one a home run by Travis Hafner.

At Boston, Cole Hamels cooled off Boston’s surging lineup with seven strong innings, helping Philadelphia salvage the finale of the weekend series.

Raul Ibanez hit a two-run homer for the Phillies, who snapped a six-game road losing streak with just their eighth win in their last 24 games overall.

Adrian Beltre hit his ninth homer for Boston, which plated double digits in each of the first two games of the series, winning by a combined score of 22-4.

At Los Angeles,  Hideki Matsui had three hits and drove in two runs, Jered Weaverpitched into the seventh inning and the Angels swept an interleague Freeway Series at Dodger Stadium for the first time.

Torii Hunter and Mike Napoli homered for the Angels, who improved to a season-best six games over .500 at 36-30 with their 10th win in 12 games.

Brian Fuentescapped the bullpen’s rocky performance with his 10th save as the Angels wrapped up a 14-game road trip with 11 wins, the franchise’s most on a single trip since 1962.

At St. Petesburg, Florida,  Chris Volstad pitched six solid innings to stop a personal six-game winless streak and Florida got two RBIs from rookie Mike Stanton in the victory.

Volstad (4-6) gave up one and four hits. He was 0-4 with a 4.91 ERA in six starts since earning a win against Washington on May 7.

Jorge Cantuand Wes Helms homered for the Marlins, who won two of three in the weekend series.

At New York,  Jorge Posada hit a grand slam for the second straight day, Robinson Canoconnected for his 100th career homer and the Yankees completed a three-game sweep.

Catching for the first time since coming off the disabled list June 2, Posada connected for his ninth grand slam in the fifth after the Astros walked the bases loaded with two outs for the second inning in a row.

The last Yankee to hit grand slams in consecutive games was catcher Bill Dickey in 1937, according to STATS LLC. The last player to do it in the big leagues was Mets center fielder Carlos Beltranon July 16 and 18, 2006.

At San Francisco, Aubrey Huff hit a pair of two-run homers, Matt Cainextended his winning streak to four consecutive starts and the Giants finished off a three-game series sweep.

Braves 7  Twins 3: At Minneapolis,  Troy Glaus homered twice and tied a career high with four hits to power Atlanta past Minnesota.

The Braves scored four runs in the first inning and built on the lead to support Kris Medlen. Atlanta took two of three in an interleague series between division leaders, a rematch of the thrilling 1991 World Series won by Minnesota in seven games.

Making his 11th major league start, Medlen (4-1) tossed a career-high eight innings and held the Twins scoreless until Delmon Young’st hree-run homer with two outs in the seventh.

The Twins didn’t get a hit until Jason Kubel lined a double with one out in the fifth.

At Cincinnati,  Zack Greinke struck out 12 in a five-hitter, ending a four-start skid and leading Kansas City over Cincinnati.

Mets 11  Orioles 4: At Baltimore,  David Wright hit two homers, Chris Carter and Jason Bayalso connected, and New York beat Baltimore for a three-game sweep.

Bay entered in an 0-for-16 skid before going 4 for 4 with four runs scored. Wright and Alex Coraeach had three of New York’s season-high 18 hits.

Mike Pelfrey (9-1) gave up three runs, nine hits and three walks in six rocky innings but received enough offensive support to win his fifth straight decision.

At Detroit,  Miguel Cabrera hit a go-ahead, three-run homer in the eighth inning to lift Detroit over skidding Pittsburgh.

The Pirates have lost a season-high eight straight and were swept by the Tigers for the first time in eight matchups.

Armando Galarraga gave up two runs in his first home start since his near-perfect game.

Brad Thomas (4-0) replaced Galarraga and got the final out in the eighth inning. Jose Valverde earned his 13th save, but gave up a run to end his scoreless streak at 25 appearances.

Garrett Joneshit a solo homer and an RBI double for Pittsburgh.

At Milwaukee,  Colby Lewis scattered three hits over eight innings and added a key two-out single with the bases loaded to lead Texas over Milwaukee.

Josh Hamilton homered for the AL West-leading Rangers, who won their fifth in six games and handed Brewers ace Yovani Gallardo(6-3) his first loss since April 10.

Lewis (6-4) tied a career high with 10 strikeouts while walking only one. His lone mistakes came against Prince Fielder, who hit two solo homers.

Hamilton has homered in four of the last five games to give him 15 this season. His 10-game hitting streak matches his career best and he leads the majors in RBIs in June with 19.

At Denver,  Jeff Francis pitched seven innings to earn his first home win in two years and Colorado beat Toronto to complete a three-game sweep.

Ryan Spilborghs homered twice and Carlos Gonzalezalso connected for the Rockies, who got their second series sweep of the season. Gonzalez drove in three runs and Clint Barmes and Chris Iannetta had two RBIs apiece.

At San Diego, Felix Hernandez came within one out of a complete game, Jose Lopezdoubled in the go-ahead run and Seattle beat San Diego to snap a five-game losing streak.

Hernandez (4-5) held the Padres in check other than a two-run, inside-the-park homer by Tony Gwynnin the third inning. Hernandez gave up four hits, tied his season high with nine strikeouts and walked one.

With a runner on, David Aardsma retired Nick Hundley for his 13th save in 17 chances.
 

At Phoenix, Chris Young rescued Arizona’s much-maligned bullpen with his second homer of the game, a two-run shot in the bottom of the ninth inning that gave the Diamondbacks the win.

Trailing by three going into the ninth, the Cardinals rallied and tied it on a wild pitch by winner Esmerling Vasquez(1-2).

Kyle McClellan(0-2) retired the first two Diamondbacks in the bottom half before Miguel Monterosingled and Young hit a drive to left.

Adam LaRoche doubled home two runs in the first inning and added an RBI single in the seventh for Arizona. Young hit a solo homer in the fourth.
