Sergio Mazza, an executive assistant manager for food and beverage of the Makati Shangri-La hotel, had just left his apartment when a gunman in a cap and jacket shot him at close range, said Superintendent Froilan Bonifacio, citing witnesses.

Bonifacio, the Makati police chief, said more than 20,000 pesos ($433) in cash, jewelry and a Blackberry phone were left on Mazza’s body. “We already ruled out the possibility of robbery hold-up,” Bonifacio told The Associated Press. “We’re trying to establish if a personal motive was behind this killing.” He described Mazza, 38, as a good-looking bachelor known to have had an active night life. He said investigators were looking into whether Mazza had made any enemies.

“We are extremely saddened by this loss and would like to express our sincerest condolences to his family,” Shangri-La said in a statement, adding that it was working closely with the police.

Meanwhile, gunmen abducted a fisherman Thursday in a southern city a day after authorities celebrated the safe rescue of a Filipino-Swiss businessman who endured two months of jungle captivity, officials said. Vicente Barrios, 60, was returning to Zamboanga city when five men aboard two vessels blocked his motorboat and seized him. A companion of Barrios jumped into the water and swam to safety, police said.
