The “Photographic Exhibition of Makkah Memories 2010” organized by the District Centers Society at the Umm Al-Qura Center for Exhibitions in Makkah was opened by Abdul Aziz Al-Khudairi, undersecretary of the Makkah Governorate.

Ghassan Nawailati, director of the event, said the exhibition is divided into two parts. One part comprises paintings, engravings and applied arts while the second is an exhibition of photographs representing the past and the present of Makkah. The showcased pieces include Saleh Al-Howbis’ book “Makkah Panorama of 110 years,” Sahl Maulawi’s book “Mirror of Haramain” and Rukn Makkawi, a stall set up by Hassan Makkawi.

“The major obstacle faced by the organizers was the reluctance of some people to hand over valuable heritage articles and photographs they possess to the exhibition organizers,” said Nawailati.

Ala Al-Qarni, head of the organizing committee, said 110 photographs by young men and women participants are on display.

Al-Qarni added that four workshops on photography have been organized on the sidelines of the exhibition.

“Each workshop was of three-hour duration,” she said. “A distinguishing feature of the exhibition is the diversity of its participants. People practicing different trades, of varying ages and genders are participating in this memorable event.”

Hassan Makkawi said he was excited to participate in the exhibition.

The Rukn showcases furniture and artifacts such as water jugs for Zamzam and trays and teapots used traditionally by Makkans.

The Rukn also exhibits several old books discussing the heritage of Makkah.

Hatem Haneef, a member of the organizing committee, said he participated in the selection of best photos and supervising the exhibition.
