- JEDDAH: Members of the executive board of the Consumer Protection Committee have called for relieving the committee’s chairman, Muhammad Al-Hamad, for a number of violations, including mismanagement of committee funds.
They made the demand in an official letter to Commerce and Industry Minister Abdullah Zainal Alireza on Tuesday.
“Since the committee was formed two years ago nothing has been done by the chairman to implement any of the objectives of the committee aimed at protecting consumers,” said the letter.
It said the chairman attended a number of foreign seminars and conferences without any reason and without the consent of the board members.
The board members alleged that the chairman spent about SR88,000 on his foreign travels in the past six months.
They said the chairman rented and furnished a new office for the committee in Riyadh at a cost of SR1 million even after the government had granted it a building free of cost.
“The chairman also rented an apartment on Olaya Street at SR360,000 and spent SR600,000 on its furnishings,” the letter stated.
