- JEDDAH: The Saudi-Yemeni business council held a meeting at the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI) on Wednesday, discussing issues such as trade exchange and investment activities.
Council head Abdullah ibn Mahfouz said the meeting discussed the benefits of providing advanced machines on the Saudi-Yemeni border to prevent counterfeit goods from being smuggled between the two countries.
The meeting also stressed the importance of private sector participation in the decision making of the two countries.
Mahfouz stressed the need to evaluate the value of trade exchange between the two countries and develop ways to increase it, as well as smooth the transfer of goods between the two countries.
The meeting also suggested opening a Saudi standards office at the Kingdom’s borders.
Members of the council called for cooperation with Umm Al-Qura University to form a legal and social team that would develop recommendations to ease commercial activity between the two countries.
The council also covered the issue of lands owned by Saudi businessmen in Yemen, which has been the subject of legal action from Yemeni courts.
The council also suggested that the Saudi chambers of commence could organize a Yemeni commercial exhibition for the first time in the Kingdom.
The Saudi-Yemeni council aims to develop commercial cooperation between businessmen in the two countries.
Saudi investments in Yemen are among the highest, with $156 million invested during the first half of 2010.
Exchange trade between Yemen and the Kingdom was worth over SR1 billion last year. Saudis usually invest in mining, industry and tourism in Yemen.
