- LONDON: Commuters are bracing for two days of travel disruption as workers on the heavily used London Underground system prepare to strike over proposed job cuts.
Members of two unions are to walk off the job for 24 hours beginning on Monday evening's rush hour. The fight focuses on plans to cut 800 jobs, mainly in station ticket offices.
But Transport for London, which runs the Underground — known commonly as the Tube — says there will be no compulsory layoffs.
More than 3.5 million people use the Tube daily. Mayor Boris Johnson said the unions "plan to inconvenience Londoners for no good reason." Bob Crow, head of the Rail and Maritime Union, says his members were "making a stand on safety and safe staffing levels on behalf of all Londoners."
