Thome hit a 2-0 pitch from Justin Germano (0-2) into the Cleveland bullpen in center field, snapping the Twins’ 21-inning scoreless streak. It was the only extra-base hit of the game.

Thome returned to the lineup after missing two games because of a mild abdominal strain and was 0 for 3 with a walk until hitting his fifth homer in his last four games.

Matt Guerrier (4-7) worked out of a two-on, none out jam in the 11th for the win, the Twins’ seventh in eight games. Matt Capps got three outs for his 12th save in 14 chances since being acquired July 29 from Washington.

Rangers 7  Yankees 6: In Arlington, Texas, Mariano Rivera blew it, ending the New York Yankees’ perfect record when leading after eight innings.

Pitching the ninth inning with a one-run lead, Rivera allowed a tying double to Ian Kinsler, then hit Jeff Francoeur on the left shoulder with the bases loaded, giving the Rangers a victory over the Yankees in yet another long game.

A night after Texas won the series opener in 13 innings, lasting 5 hours, 12 minutes, this one took 4:16 — plus a 59-minute rain delay in the bottom of the fifth inning. The teams also went from using 19 pitchers on Friday night to using 14.

The Yankees were 76-0 when leading after eight before Rivera’s third blown save opportunity of the year.

Much of the crowd of 49,210 — second-largest this season — stuck around to watch the Rangers win their fourth straight game.

Royals 8 White Sox 2: In Chicago, Kyle Davies pitched six solid innings, Gregor Blanco and Kila Ka’aihue each had three hits and Kansas City snapped a four-game losing streak.

Blanco and Ka’aihue each scored two runs as Kansas City roughed up Edwin Jackson (3-1) on its way to 18 hits.

Davies (8-9) allowed one run and five hits, winning consecutive starts for the first time this season.

Paul Konerko hit his 34th homer for the White Sox, who have lost four of five.

Athletics 4  Red Sox 3: In Oakland, California, Rajai Davis hit a tiebreaking RBI triple in the seventh inning and Andrew Bailey struck out David Ortiz with the tying run on second to end the game, preserving Oakland’s victory.

Adrian Beltre doubled in Victor Martinez with two out in the ninth to get Boston within one but pinch-hitter Ortiz looked at a called third strike, giving Bailey his 23rd save in 26 opportunities.

Oakland scored three times in the seventh and once in the eighth, erasing a 2-0 deficit and clinching its first season-series win over the Red Sox since 2006. Mark Ellis hit a tying RBI single before coming around on Davis’ hit.

Rays 13  Blue Jays 1: In Toronto, Brad Hawpe hit a grand slam for Tampa Bay, and Wade Davis won his seventh straight decision.

Kelly Shoppach also homered as the AL wild-card leaders won for the third time in four games.

Davis (12-9) improved to 3-0 with a 3.24 ERA in four starts since a stint on the 15-day disabled list with a strained shoulder. The right-hander, who leads AL rookies in wins, allowed one run and seven hits in seven innings, struck out six and walked three.

Davis, who has not lost since June 27 against Arizona, matched Jeff Niemann (2009-10) and Mark Hendrickson (2005) for the most consecutive victories in Rays history.

Angels 7  Mariners 4: In Anaheim, California,  Hideki Matsui homered and Torii Hunter had four RBIs to lead the Angels to the victory over Felix Hernandez and the Mariners.

Ervin Santana (16-9) tied a career high for victories, allowing three runs and five hits over 7 1-3 innings.

Seattle’s Ichiro Suzuki extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a three-run homer in the eighth. It was his 2,215th major league hit, breaking a tie with Joe DiMaggio for 167th place on the career list.

Kevin Jepsen gave up a two-out RBI single in the ninth to Josh Wilson before Fernando Rodney closed it out for his ninth save in 14 chances.

Orioles 5 Tigers 3: In Detroit, Adam Jones had four hits and Jeremy Guthrie pitched seven shutout innings to help Baltimore get the victory.

Brian Roberts and Felix Pie had three hits apiece for Baltimore.

Guthrie (10-13) gave up five hits — all in the first three innings — and one walk. He is 3-0 with a sparkling 0.81 ERA in his last three starts.

Koji Uehara pitched the ninth for his ninth save and second in as many days.
