The Shoura Council delegation, headed by its Vice President Bandar bin Mohammed Hajjar, will back the request from the United Arab Emirates to include the two items on the agenda, the council's Secretary-General Muhammad Al-Ghamdi said on Wednesday.He added that these were two issues that needed global attention.As well as soliciting further support for Pakistan, Al-Ghamdi said the UAE also wanted to examine a number of Arab and Islamic issues related to countries in the region, especially regarding legislatures and parliamentary bodies.Other members of the delegation include Al-Ghamdi, Saleh Al-Husseini, Sadaka Al-Fadel and Abdullah Al-Bukhari.The main agenda of the three-day meeting includes election of the president and vice presidents of the 123rd Assembly and consideration of requests for including an emergency item in the agenda.They will be followed by panel discussions on preventing electoral violence and ensuring the smooth transition of power.Several committees will discuss issues in areas such as agriculture, transparency and accountability in political party funding and democracy and human rights.Group discussions will take place in Geneva on the items chosen for debate during the 124th Assembly, to be held in Panama City from April 15-20, 2011.Al-Ghamdi will also attend a meeting involving secretary-generals of member parliaments.The meeting will also discuss the issue of parliamentary expenditure, its management during the financial crisis, as well as challenges and solutions.Established in 1889, the IPU enjoys a membership of over 140 parliaments across the globe.It conducts its business through its Executive Committee and three standing committees dealing with peace and international security, sustainable development, finance and trade, as well as democracy and human rights.The IPU is the only organization that represents legislative bodies on a global level.Its mission, described in Article I of its bylaws, is to work for peace and cooperation among people and to strengthen representing institutions.
