Erekat said in a press statement on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the United Nations that the member states pledged through the UN Charter to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, promote human rights and “establish the conditions under which justice and respect for the obligations arising from treaties and other sources of international law can be maintained.”

The negotiator said that “when Israel, joined the United Nations in 1949, it vowed to uphold this cause.”

“Instead” Erekat said, “what we have witnessed is constant violations of not only of this Charter, but numerous General Assembly and Security Council Resolutions. In the process, Israel has undermined the efficacy of and derogated the UN System, the very authority through which it was created. Instead, Israel works diligently to pressure its allies to oppose the creation of a Palestinian state.”

He added: “It is time for Israel to stop its blatant disregard for international law and international consensus. It is time for Israel to respect human rights and the right of self determination of the Palestinian people.”

“It is time for the international community to hold Israel accountable for its disregard for international law. It is time for Palestine to be free,” he said.

According to Erekat, “Palestine remains occupied and the Palestinian people’s right to self determination remains unfulfilled. On this historic day we ask all member states to honor the noble objectives of the UN by holding Israel accountable for its continued occupation of Palestine and to uphold the rights of Palestinian refugees.”

Meanwhile, Erekat slammed Israel for a draft bill ranking Jerusalem as a national priority zone. The law encourages young Israelis to move to the city to benefit from a series of economic, education and social development plans.

Erekat said that the law is another step forward to declare Jerusalem as Israel’s undividable capital.

He noted that annexing the city to Israel “is illegible and won’t be recognized.”

The relevant UN resolutions, international law and Geneva Conventions define Jerusalem as an occupied territory, the negotiator stressed.

The legislative bill on Jerusalem is a new challenge to the United States, which attempts to push forward the stalled peace talks in the Middle East, Erekat added.

“This is proof that the Israeli government selected settlements instead of peace,” he said, referring to a decision to resume building Jewish settlements in the West Bank.

The bill comes as the Palestinians Authority suspended the direct peace talks with Israel on Oct. 2, after the later refused to extend a 10-month moratorium on freezing settlement construction that ended in Sept. 26.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said during a Sunday’s government meeting, “We are maintaining close contact with the US government with the aim of restarting the peace process, such that it won’t be stopped again in a few more weeks or months.”

Netanyahu added that the only way to reach a peace agreement is through direct talks, and called on the Palestinians to fulfill their obligations.
