Chavan had a brief relief, following his involvement in the Adarsh Housing Society scam, which is located in the posh suburb of Colaba. Documentary evidences published in the media exhibited that five members of the society were close relatives of Chavan. Several politicians from Congress, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Shiv Sena, several top serving and retired defense officials and bureaucrats were also involved in the housing scam.

Kalmadi, the high-profile Congress leader who is also the president of the Indian Olympic Association and organizer of the Common Wealth Games (CWG), was allegedly involved in the Games financial scam in which million of rupees were siphoned off.

Chavan soon after receiving the orders from the Congress high command to submit his resignation to the Gov. K. Shankaranarayan, drove to the Raj Bhavan to submit his resignation letter, which was immediately accepted.

However, the governor asked Chavan to continue as caretaker chief minister till a new leader is elected as the chief minister.

Meanwhile, a two-member team consisting Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Defense Minister A.K. Anthony, who is also in charge of Congress affairs in Maharashtra, arrived in Mumbai late Tuesday. They will meet Congress legislators and hold discussions with them over the election of the new chief minister.

There are several claimants in the race to succeed Chavan as chief minister, however, Minister in Prime Minister's Office Prithviraj Chavan and Energy Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde are the front-runners.

But the chances of Prithviraj Chavan seem bright, as Shinde's name also figured in Adrash scam along with federal minister Vilasrao Deshmukh.
