Saudi attorney Khalid Al-Nowaiser said the primary goal of the council would be to remove the economic obstacles which women face in their careers and investments.

Encouraging women's rights and urging the authorities to create clear regulations regarding the legal, civic and social affairs of Saudi women are extremely important for the continued development of the country.

Although the Supreme Economic Council deals with the Kingdom's economic affairs, more needs to be done to help women achieve equal rights and opportunities, he said, adding that the Council on Women Affairs will focus much-needed attention on these issues.

Al-Nowaiser confirmed that more opportunities should be given to women to increase their role to benefit Saudi society. He proposed that the council should be under the direct auspices of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah. The role of the council will not be limited to employment, but should include all other aspects of life to promote harmony with men and other family members.

Decree No. 62 of the Council of Ministers contains formal procedures that regulate female employment in government and private sectors, which is considered an advancement in helping women realize their personal goals.

He notes that the decree includes the establishment of a permanent high commission for woman affairs and calls for all necessary official actions designed to promote female employment in the Kingdom. He hopes that the government will initiate a media strategy to spread the necessary awareness throughout Saudi society regarding the importance of employing women and using their talents and capabilities to help the Kingdom achieve further progress in social and economic development.
