Sumiati Salan Mustapa has been receiving treatment in Madinah since Nov. 8.

HRC President Bandar Al-Iban has assigned lawyer Sultan bin Zahim to represent Sumiati and pursue her public and private rights.

According to a source at the HRC, Zahim will continue to pursue her general rights even if Mustafa decides not to exercise her private rights in accordance with human trafficking and Shariah laws.

Al-Iban also assigned a team of experts from the commission to follow up on the case, visit her at the hospital and prepare a full report on her case.

The HRC had requested a full medical report on her and asked the Prosecution and Investigation Commission in Madinah to keep them updated on the progress of investigations.

Al-Iban pledged to pursue Sumiati’s case until all her rights are restored, stressing the fact that laws do not differentiate between citizens and expatriates.

According to a hospital report, Sumiati was burned in many places, while both legs had lost almost all motion.

Some of the skin on her head had peeled off, while she had sustained many old injuries such as skin loss on her lips, a fractured middle finger and a cut near her eye.

Her female sponsor had been arrested in connection with the case. According to a Madinah police chief, three members of her family were also allegedly involved in the torture and investigations are ongoing.
