- BERLIN: The euro is slipping further against the dollar due to worries that Europe’s debt crisis will spread from Ireland to other heavily indebted countries like Portugal and Spain.
The 16-nation currency bought $1.3290 in morning European trading Thursday, down from $1.3317 late the day before in New York.
The British pound is down to $1.5752 from $1.5762 in New York, while the dollar is up slightly to purchase 83.63 Japanese yen from 83.60 late Wednesday.
Ireland on Sunday asked for a massive loan, estimated at €85 billion ($115 billion), from the European Union and International Monetary Fund, as Greece did in May.
Investors are anxious that other countries, chiefly Spain and Portugal, will also have to seek aid as their borrowing costs soar.
