- BEIJING: "Pakistan-China friendship has contributed to the regional peace, security and economic development," said Vice Premier Wang Qishan during a meeting with former Prime Minister of Pakistan Shaukat Aziz, who is here on a weeklong tour at the invitation of the Chinese Peoples Institute for Foreign Affairs.
The vice premier appreciated the significant role played by Shaukat Aziz in expanding bilateral relations during his tenure as prime minister of Pakistan. During the meeting, they discussed the global political and economic situation, role of G20 and the current developments in the Chinese economy.
The former premier said friendship between the two neighboring countries is exemplary. He expressed the confidence that cooperation between them would continue to grow in all fields. He thanked the Chinese government for providing generous help for the relief of flood-affected people in Pakistan.
Earlier, in his keynote address at the China Foreign Affairs University on the subject of "China-Global Challenges and Opportunities" Aziz said the emergence of the Peoples Republic of China is one of the most spectacular developments of the 20th century. China's economic, military, diplomatic and scientific progress is historic and presents a vast set of opportunities and challenges for China as well as the world.
He said while China is clearly emerging as a dominant economic player in the world, it also faces certain challenges. These will require attention in the near future if China is to successfully leverage its economic size productively, especially in sectors like financial services, research and development, value added manufacturing, brand development and marketing, regulatory reforms and capacity building, he said.
Despite the fact that China is the second largest economy in the world, its per capita income still has room for improvement, which will ensure equitable and sustainable growth as well as a harmonious society, he said.
Aziz also visited Zhou Enlai Museum in Tianjin to pay respect to the great Chinese leader and a true and sincere friend of Pakistan.
On this occasion Tianjin vice mayor gave him a detailed briefing about the new International Economic and Financial Center and appreciated his suggestions and comments in this regard.
During his stay Aziz also met a cross section of political, business and civil society representatives.
